In 2000 you had the Jazzanova Remixes with all their remixes, then Jazzanova came along with their debut album in 2002, and now in 2003 it’s time to announce the album "Jazzanova Remixed", which includes all remixes of Jazzanova tracks ever made. This is a massive double-CD with many remixes that were only available on vinyl so far and some brand-new remixes, especially produced for this release.

The Jazzanova boys themselves did the selection of the remixers, whereas most of them are old friends, and the boys deeply appreciate their musical output.

All producers have their roots in an eclectic musical background. Surprisingly the final remix products are quite different in their style and still - somehow - homogenous. Whether it is Bugz In The Attic, Wahoo and King Britt with a more House music orientated interpretation, or Madlib, Jazzy Jeff and DJ DSL who rather tend to produce in a Downbeat Hip Hop style way. But there is a lot more as for example Stereolab and Dr. Rockit who drive the electronica independent road or Moonstarr, Ayro and Ian O’Brien with their little darker, Detroit style productions. Anyway, you know the score, so make sure you get hold of this fine bundle!

Somethin’s Missing (Could this be the debut?)

I bet it would have been quite strenuous for you as well. Your shoulders are aching and your eardrums are somewhat smothered by the flow of heart-warming words: 10 1/2 times around the world and everyone is concerned about you: your opinion, your address, your album-release-date. The job here is to break a sound that the world hasn’t been waiting for, but before you can say "Japan-tour" you are already on the road and you just can’t find the brakes. A strange sensation... visiting far away countries and discovering bursting Jazzanova sections in record stores... talking to people on the phone, that have been long respected idols... winning unnecessary prizes... reading in ID-magazine that one had fixed a gold standard for the remix-business. Why is this all so funny? Well, the Jazzanova guys will certainly never follow any style-doctrines pressed upon them by the international trend-press or hipsters policies.

Well, there comes a time when all pleasure ends and a moment of truth arrives. Isn’t there something missing? After festival appearances in front of crowds of 10,000 people, bucketloads of praise from colleagues and a remix-collection, that sold like hot cakes. Isn’t there something very important missing, something vital, something that starts a normal carrier? Right: the debut album. And what else: the time and patience to produce it. It can be a big distraction if you are flavour of the month for several years. Back in 99, when the Jazzanova hype was in a more or less manageable proportion, I wrote a cover story on them. One of the questions I asked at the time was, if they were to have the same destiny as their buddies Kruder and Dorfmeister: releasing their remixes as their album leaving the "real" album somewhere in their sampler.

"Don’t worry" was the answer, the finished album was scheduled for Spring 2000. By a stroke of luck, it will be released now. "In Between" is the long anticipated and correct answer to the question, how it feels (now slightly wiser after all these years) to deliberately sit on the fence. Face it: "In Between" is not the album that answers to the hype. It will still be heard and loved when the Nu-Jazz Compilation overkill has hit the dustbin of Pop-music history - no quickie, no simple supply to demand. How could it be? Jazzanova set their own standard so high, that they needed several attempts to gain the desired result.

Jazzanova drawing by Ian Porter, winner of Gilles Peterson's BBC
Radio 1 contest

It has often been pointed out that the six Berliners have set a standard for the art of sampling. Years ago an English producer said that their perfectionism and their love for details can only, if at all possible be compared to that of George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars. Somewhat astounding that Jazzanova felt in no position to direct a full feature-film up until now. To comprehend why such diverse producer-icons as Techno-Godfather Derrick May or HipHop legend Jazzy Jeff get a twinkle in their eyes by the slightest mention of the word "Jazzanova" then you probably have to stop by their studio to see them work. To love their music is to have an open ear.

All those, who expected an album in the style of their first genre-bending 12 Inch "Fedime’s Flight", a record they pressed up themselves 5 years ago, will be somewhat disappointed - incidentally, Compost, now their label-partner, didn’t recognize the significance of that 12 inch at the time either -. If the guys were hardcore weed-smoking Englishmen they might have given their debut-album the name "This ain’t no Brazilectro" to clear their point. If it is one thing they have learned in the last years, then to be at least two steps ahead of their imitators.

Being many isn’t the only vital reason that they have an advantage. Naturally, 12 ears hear more than two; six different musical-educations are more inspiring than one. Collectivism is made to a central asset. All this wouldn’t be of value if it weren’t possible to fuse these qualities and abilities to serve one sole mission. Everything on the album seems to make sense. One feeling merges into the next. It is all in between and is all clearly Jazzanova.

Neither does Jazzanova’s HipHop excursion with Philly’s finest Capital A feel like an escape from the lounge-ghetto in search of street credibility nor does - Jazz-legend and Charles Mingus companion – Doug Hammonds vocal deployment in "Dance the Dance" curry favour with the grey-haired music-critic’s. Jazzanova is at home in both worlds, both at Montreux Jazz festival and in that clandestine illegal bar of my girl friend’s cousin.

Fashion victims watch out: Pants
up in 2003!!

The fact that the first ever independent German Hip Hop record (Rock da Most "Use The Posse") was released by Jazzanova-producer Roskow might be of interest. It could also just be a mere fact that Stefan and Axel also paid their dues as HipHop producers, let’s say for all those sceptic "let’s keep it real" HipHop-followers.

"In Between" is the result of a functioning "family affair". On the one side it presents the Jazzanova-affiliated Sonar Kollektiv – the mothership for sisters and brothers in mind – with Clara Hill and Micatone’s bass-player Paul Kleber, and on the other, close relatives from around the world: from Philadelphia’s Soul-man of the moment Vikter Duplaix, to spoken-word queen Ursula Rucker and the former MC900 Ft. Jesus Rapper Hawkeye Fanatic; from the Londoners Rob Gallagher and Valerie Etienne to vibes-man David Friedmann, who might be known for his work with Tim Buckley. There was no necessity to flash chequebooks to get people involved. Everybody was very enthusiastic about the project.

"Together we will grow, everyday makin’ our time for us, to celebrate world family" Doug Hammonds proclamation in "Dance the Dance" sounds like the spiritual message of "In Between": together we are strong and therefore unstoppable. And well, the cutting edge programming of the tracks doesn’t make a difference if you want to put them one of those long overdue tapes for your girlfriend. That makes the whole thing even more astonishing.

Remember: All you hold in your hands now is just a debut album. A debut right for the days to come.

JCR 027 - Jazzanova – No Use

Maxi-CD Tracklisting
1. No Use feat. Clara Hill (Original)
2. No Use (Instrumental)
3. No Use (Acapella)
4. That Night feat. Victer Duplaix

The main track of Jazzanova’s second Maxi-CD "No Use" is a wonderful smooth vocal song that features the clear voice of Clara Hill (the Berlin singer talent will soon release an own longplayer on Sonar Kollektiv) and marks the follow up to their first Maxi-CD "Soon" with remixes by Domu, Jazzy Jeff and P Smoovah. Clara’s vocals are supported by some decently set percussive beats, a groovy bass line and warm Fender-Rhodes sounds. The release of "No Use" is accomplished by a great video, which was shot by Spanish director Héctor Muelas.
This Maxi-CD also features the superb track "That Night", a soul-jazz number based on broken beats, which, not only because of Vikter Duplaix’s vocals, spreads some deep sexy feelings. This non-album track was so far only available on vinyl (JCR 026-1 "That Night / Days To Come EP").

Jazzanova are back or let's say they were never gone. Their 12 Inch "That Night" and "Days to come" brought them back on the dancefloors around the world. Their collection of remixes "Jazzanova Remixes 1997-2000" has already proved that there is more to dance-music than just bass and four-to-the-floor beats.

"Soon" the first Single from their debut-album "In Between" is the first single release from their debut album "In Between" that will hit the stores on the 29th of April 2002. Beside the original mix you will find several remixes done by the likes of Jazzy Jeff and Domu. This first Jazzanova single shows that Jazzanova have not only mastered the art of beats but also know how to work with full-fledged song structuring and vocalists.

So this is how Jazzanova sounds when the beats get slower. Vikter Duplaix's crooner vocals are highlighted by a hybrid-bossa with a soulfull electro feeling. For those who don't know Vikter Duplaix; he just released a DJ-Kicks album on K7! Records and has dropped 12 Inch's on Groove Attack Records and as "Critical Point" on Master at Work records.

The Jazzanova single "Soon" will be accompanied by a video-clip. The clip was directed by none other than Jutojo (yes, these are also the designers of the beautiful Jazzanova Album packaging) and Micheal Dörffler. The clip was shot in Berlin by Annabelle Hanke and produced by Produktion 2, Cine Plus Mediaservice Berlin.

Some words on the remixes…

1. "Soon" Domu Vocal Mix
This is the kind of Domu production we have learned to love. You may know Domu through his releases on Dego's (4Hero) label 2000Black and his production work with Archive label owner Enrico Crivellero under the name of Rima. Domu’ treatment turns the Jazzanova track "Soon" into a freaked out beat-monster. He actually musically minimised the track to maximum, not to forget the strings, strings, strings.

2. "Soon" Domu ill dub
Well this is where you can listen to this opus without being strangely touched by Vikter Duplaix sexy vocals.

3. "Soon" a touch of jazz mix von Jazzy Jeff
Mr. Duplaix voice get’s a new packaging with fat-beats by a Philedephia soulmate. None other than Jazzy Jeff himself produced this crisp remix. Many may remember Jeff’s work with now big movie star Will Smith and his "Touch of Jazz" production work on Jill Scotts beautiful debut album "Who is Jill Scott?". The smooth production here makes "Soon" to a dancefloor-friendly tune adding some boogie percussions and keeping it particularly soulful.

4. "Soon" P Smoovah Remix
So who is P-smoovah? You may ask. He’s one of Jazzy Jeff’s homies. Jeff let him have a go on Jazzanova track "Soon" with beautiful results. He created a very deep interpretation of the Jazzanova track staying on the jazzy side of things. Check P Smoovah work on the new

Can you believe that he even added his own vocals. Besides that he gave us 8 mixes and we had big problems to figure out which one was the best.

2. Days To Come - Ian O‘Brian Remix
Well, we have always admired the work of Ian O'Brian. At last we had the appropriate track for him to remix. You know somehow this guy also smelled the air of Detroit. I don't know how we got on this trail. This track builds and builds and build, we love it.

Big Up to the Attica Blues massive! Keep on bringing that block-party feeling.

2. That Night - Vikter Duplaix Remix
Vikter Duplaix remixes the Jazzanova track on which he initially sang, making it to a functional broken-beat anthem. He puts his own voice in exactly the right place. The samples are used in a typical Hip-House style. Vikter thank you for all the support you have givin us!

JCR 023 - Jazzanova – That Night / Days To Come

It's been a while since the Jazzanova track "Caravelle" hit the dance floor or "Introspection" enchanted your bedroom. This new Jazzanova 12" might surprise you. Both tracks are undoubtedly made for the dance floor. "That Night" features the vocal artistry of Vikter Duplaix, one of the many players of the Philadelphia story.... goose bumps.

The second track "Days To Come" really proves that Jazzanova have been on the road for the last year. So, you always thought that Jazzanova was about the latin hustle and the brazil shuffle. This track definitely proves that Jazzanova is just about good dance music no matter what influence. Welcome to Detroit, observed through the eyes of Jazzanova.

About Jazzanova

Jazzanova are a Berlin based producer collective consisting of the Jazzanova DJ-team (Jürgen von Knoblauch, Alexander Barck, and Claas Brieler), the producers of Extended Spirit (Stefan Leisering and Axel Reinemer), and Kosma (Roskoe Kretschmann). Jazzanova had discovered their sonic brotherhood DJing at Berlin’s Delicious Doughnuts Club and hooked up as a team back in 1995.

To Jazzanova, music means the search for a common language of international club music, to take in influences from all different cultures and musical styles, to fuse these styles together and get the audience involved in the whole musical spectrum of that fusion. Their love for deep jazz and modern beats has led their music to become a somewhat stunning amalgamation of retro and new sounds that echoes almost all musical styles from HipHop or Afrofunk to Drum & Bass, Boogie, Brazil, Latin, and Soul. Always reacting directly to new and fresh influences, Jazzanova have developed a percussion-oriented, sophisticated, clean and warm broken-beat-style that is constantly changing in form and allows no pigeon-holing. It’s just simply jazzanova!

Ever since Gilles Peterson played their first track, "Fedime’s Flight" on his radio show in 1997, Jazzanova have been asked to produce remixes for many of their idols, acts like U.F.O., 4Hero, Incognito, and Azymuth.
Jazzanova still first and foremost remix pieces of artists that have especially influenced and inspired them. In their attempt to pay tribute to the artist they are interpreting, Jazzanova always try to capture the very essence not only of the particular track, but of the entire album. As you listen closely to their remixes, you will always discover elements of the artist’s former records and find the spirit of his entire work reflected. As each Jazzanova remix is produced with great respect and effort, it is no wonder they sometimes spend up to three months in the studio before a remix is completed. What they finally come up with are some excellently produced, very DJ-set oriented pieces that shift between different styles and tempi, oscillate between jazzy and electronic feelings and are sure to enjoy dancers and listeners alike.

The flourishing collaboration between the two German labels Jazzanova Records and Compost Records began with the EP "Caravelle". Due to their long-time friendship and their similar opinions on music, the Jazzanovas and Compost-owner Michael Reinboth decided to team up as a new label in winter 1998. With Michael bringing in his know-how and experience as a label producer and Jazzanova contributing the music, JCR has set new standards on club sounds and will guarantee the finest collection of current jazz impressions flavoured with unique and refreshing vibes and beats. In Berlin, Jazzanova have set forth their idea of mutual exchange and networking with other artists and founded the Sonar Kollektiv, a label that functions as an alliance of different Berlin musicians and has served as a "trainee-program" and door-opener to the world of international club music to many.
