Liner Notes by Patrick Forge

Summer 2000, the sounds and flavours of Brazilian music are once again everywhere, testimony to our enduring love affair with that most seductive of rhythms, the samba. This wonderful series of compilations has told the story of samba's influence in Germany, Europe and beyond with tracks both ancient and modern, from "authentic" Brazilian rhythms, to samba – fusion, to contemporary club grooves that sometimes only bear a trace of Brazilian flavour yet still resonate with the happy feeling that is essentially "Glücklich".

Sometimes it's difficult for the rest of the world to understand Brazilian culture when we are constantly deluged with cliched images of carnival dancers and idyllic beaches, but even if we know about the grim economic realities and the still divisive racial inequalities, we still fell the joy in the music. And it's this feeling that has inspired generations of musicians producers and DJs to draw from the rich and varied traditions of Brazilian music in their own work.

Perhaps starting back in the 1950s with the seminal movie "Black Orpheus" Brazilian music has reached out and touched the rest of the world. From the explosion of bossa-nova in the sixties to the popularity of the samba groove with seventies fusion artists.- The influence was there at the beginning of the jazz-dance movement and in the renaissance of bossa-nova in pop music during the early eighties. Through to the nineties when record dealers really started to plunder the wealth of Brazilian rare groove, and classic recordings started appearing on vinyl ‘reissues'. Just like it's rhythms Brazilian music has that elastic quality, it keeps springing back. Just like it's harmonies it comes in waves. And with each wave it seems to get stronger

With Glücklich our estimable compiler, the DJ and member of the production trio that bears his name, Rainer Trüby, has focused on the influence of Brazilian music on other cultures. It started with the first volume's strictly German selection, broadened the net with the second one to include a wealth of Euro rare grooves with a Brazilian flavour, and with the third embraced the new school artists who have been updating the tradition for the dance floor. This latest selection from our friend in Freiburg maintains the high quality with a truly international cast of contributors, focusing mainly on the way the Brazilian influence is reflected by a diverse bunch of contemporary producers. However alongside the new, there's a clutch of classic grooves, testimony to aprevious generation's inspiration. Glücklich is fusion old school and new, it's music for the soulful dance floor, it's bossa-jazz meets beats, samba house, call it what you want...

whatever it is, the music has an uplifting quality inspired by our Brazilian love affair. Hailing from Norway and Belgium respectively, both Espen Horne's "Magnetica" and Buscemi's "Ramiro's Theme" are examples of ‘loop' tracks, where a bit of crafty larceny has introduced a classic groove into a new context. These tracks bear testimony to the way in which obscure recordings have influenced producers, (and found their way into their samplers!). There are more abstract moody excursions from Gotan Project's "Triptico" (bossa-tango jazz breakbeat ?!) and Minus 8's dreamy "Elysian Fields".

Samba-fusion comes in both new and old school forms, you can hear the way in which the classic seventies sound is dragged into the now by Mark De Clive-Lowe on "El Dia Perfecto", and represented in all it's original glory by David Matthews' slinky "Sambafrique". Mark hails from New Zealand and his musical quest has taken him to Tokyo and New York through he has now settled in London where his keyboard talents have found their way into the heart of the thriving West London scene. David Matthews is one of those unsung heroes, an ace arranger who worked for James Brown in the seventies. And samba fusion is also included for the first time in it's distinctly Japanese variety, hear the continuity between Himiko Kikuchi's "What's Baby Singin'" and Kyoto Jazz Massive's "A Calmaria" through decades separate these two tracks they share a similar vibe. Brazilian music has always found an appreciative audience in Japan, and the new generation of fans is represented nowhere better than at Yoshihiro Okino's legendary night Freedom Time in Osaka. With his brother Shuya and the awesome talents of keyboardist Hajime Yoshizawa the Kyoto Jazz Massive have lately been hitting the highs with some inspired productions.

Female vocals have always been another essential ingredient of Glücklich's soulful stew, the classic shuffle of Madeline Bell's "That's What Friends Are For" is buoyant and heart-warming, Wei Chi's "Heaven" is an up tempo bossa on the same tip, unashamedly optimistic! Of course the Trüby Trio had to come through on their home turf, "Alegre" is aimed at the dance floor of such nights as Rainer's own incredible Root Down sessions where it will undoubtedly hit the spot. Supersempft are also from Rainer's home town of Freiburg, their name is distinctively German but their music displays an appreciation of the authentic feel of Brazilian rhythm, "O Preguicoso" swings with a certain subtlety. Salome De Bahia has recently graced the work of French producers Bob Sinclair and DJ Gregory, "Procurando O Caminho" was recently rediscovered on an obscure seven inch release from Munich, a great funky Brazilian rare groove that brings a touch of authenticity to this selection. Finally Ready Made's "Transcontinental" beats up a bossa vibe to great effect, a bit like Sergio Mendes with breaks.

Impressive and consistent the Glücklich series are proving to be that rare phenomenon, a cult success. Catch the vibe and get happy.

On boundaries of Argentinean music (tango and milonga) and electronic music, Gotan Project is developing its concept between the hands of Philippe Cohen Solal, Christoph H. Mueller and Eduardo Makaroff. The three musicians from different origins created this project as they share the same feelings about the possibilities of Argentinean music bringing the musical emotion at its paroxysm. The Gotan Project has so far released two 10" on Ya Basta! Records from Paris, and their music has been heavily played by important underground DJs like Peter Kruder, Gilles Peterson, UFO, Rainer Trüby etc. in the past months.

After their great exclusive track for the Glücklich III compilation, another exclusive by the Trüby Trio for this one. This time their track is a very groovy and sunny samba percussive number that swings and definitely will cause trouble on the dancefloor. The Trüby Trio are currently working on their debut album, which will be out early next year. A remix 12" of their A Go Go / Carajillo E.P. is out now, featuring mixes by Jazzanova, DJ Muro, Boozoo Bajou.

After that she became a central part of the innovative group "Blue Mink" with whom she recorded the memorable song "Melting Pot", a huge hit in 1969. Madeline Bell worked with Tom Jones, James Last, Joe Cocker, John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin and many others and she played a major role in London's recording studios. She also provided songs to many Hollywood film soundtracks, like "A Touch of Class", "Hammerhead" etc.. All her colleagues agree that Madeline has one of the best voices in the business. 8. Mark De Clive-Lowe (up to cd tracklist)
Half New Zealander and half Japanese, Mark De Clive-Lowe has dedicated his life to music. Following his debut album, Six Degrees, which he wrote and produced by himself, he is considered to be one of the artists at the forefront of the nu- skool jazz and beat movement. Six Degrees breaks down the boundaries between jazz, house, hip hop and drum'n bass. The single release of the album "El Dia Perfecto" is the track featured on Glücklich IV, a club classic, which has been highly acclaimed since its release. Mark is also involved in a new South Pacific-flavoured hip hop project "Nuvonesia", together with MC Imon Star and DJ Manuel Bundy. They just released a debut album called "Island of Nuvonesia", which is only available in New Zealand. At the moment Mark is working on a remix for the new Bill Evans album.

9. Wei Chi (up to cd tracklist)
Wei Chi is Raoul Walton. This is his first new track after his appearance on the Future Sounds Of Jazz Vol.6 compilation. Raoul was born in New York, Manhattan, and played with everybody in the Jazz and Fusion scene over there in the mid-Eighties. Just to mention a few: Michael Urbaniak, Sam Rivers, Dom Um Romao and Kenny Kirkland. In fact - for 20 years now - Raoul has been working as a well-trained and full- professional bass-player from e-bass, slap to setar. Not only in the Jazz field has he recorded dozens of sessions and live-gigs with Doug Wimbish, Keith Le Blanc (Fats Comet Cru, Sugarhill Gang) and others. During the last two years he spent some time in Munich, doing Jazz and Freejazz sessions, recording and playing both studio and live-gigs with Fauna Flash. You can also hear his style on some Trüby Trio tracks.

10. Himiko Kikuchi (up to cd tracklist)
Himiko Kikuchi is a Japanese composer and e-piano player, who was quite popular and successful in Japan in the late seventies. She recorded about 4 albums, which were only available in Japan, and she actually never achieved international fame. A famous guest musician on the track featured on the compilation include Ernie Watts on Saxophone.

11. Kyoto Jazz Massive (up to cd tracklist)
"A Calmaria", the first new track from the Kyoto Jazz Massive on Compost since their debut 12". And this is exclusive to the compilation. Kyoto Jazz Massive are the two brothers Shuya Okino and Yoshihiro Okino. Their future jazz blend of Jazz, Bossa, Latin and House is not a trainspotting one, they are definitely one of the pioneers and originators in Japan since the late Eighties. Their club-night "Kyoto Jazz Massive" is almost legendary! They organise regularly club-nights in Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto since the early nineties, and their concept of playing old and new full spectrum sets was and still is a similar concept to regular jazz-orientated club-nights like the Mojo-Club (Hamburg), THIS! @ Bar Rhumba (London) or Into Somethin' @ Muffatcafe (Munich). Yoshihiro started his own label "Especial Records" this year, which will release its second 12" "Hajime Yoshizawa – Secret Flight E.P." including a Dego Remix in November.

12. Buscemi (up to cd tracklist)
Buscemi is the name of the "Belgique Musique" dance project created by Dirk Swartenbroekx. Buscemi just released his second longplayer "Our Girl From Havanna", from which the track for the Glücklich compilation is taken from. The album is a delicious and unique South-American approach of house and drum 'n bass. Future Jazz with a Brazilian touch, warm house, diva vocals and so on, Buscemi is a master in producing diverse dance music, so groovy, it surely rocks the dancefloor.

13. Supersempft (up to cd tracklist)
Supersempft are the two musicians and producers Till Maragnoli and Thomas Braun. In 1994 they met each other in an reggae-afro band and since 1997 they have worked together as Supersempft. Their technique is to work with several guest musicians for their productions in the studio. The result is music with diverse influences and instrumentation, which gives Supersmepft its own original sound. On Glücklich IV they release their first track and there will soon be more on Compost Records from this dynamic duo out of Freiburg.

14. Coisa Nossa feat. Salome De Bahia (up to cd tracklist)
Coisa Nossa is a Latin American school project, based in Munich. The track which features Salome De Bahia, was only available on 7" vinyl in a very limited edition. He also helped Gilles Peterson to compile the "Talkin' Jazz III"-compilation and he compiled "Root Down 99" for Nuphonic Records. The Trüby Trio has remixed Frederic Galliano's "Plis Infinis N° 2 " (F-Communications), Tab Two "Belle Affaire" (Virgin), Bobby Matos (Ubiquity). La Seducione "Nago" (Right Tempo), Miyazawa, Nitin Sawhney (Outcaste), Extended Spirit (Dialog Rec.) Yasushi Ide (Warner /Japan) and several others. This summer Gilles Peterson invited him amongst Peter Kruder to play at the BBC Radio 1 Ibiza Event, and at the Talkin' Loud Party during the Miami Music Conference where Rainer once again demonstrated his DJ skills and incredible music knowledge.
