Soulpatrol
Michael Rütten has come a long way. After being a long term full spectrum DJ, journalist for German mags such as Groove, JazzThing and Wom , talented producer in a collaboration with Max Schneider, compiling the highly successful "Tribes- Soul Searchin " series on Infracom, hosting his clubnight and Radioshow in Frankfurt and fullfilling the dues of a family father, Michael can be called a true missionary in every aspect.
Releasing their "Love EP" (incl. a Charlie Dark Mix, which went No.1 in DCC charts) on Infracom this spring, their productions confirm the true quality already presented in his DJ-Sets. Where Max Schneider is the Sound Engineer and Producer of Soulpatrol, Michael Rütten is the man with the musical background bringing in his ideas. We are glad they contribute the perfect introductory track to this 8th volume of "Future Sounds of Jazz" in hybridysing the beautiful vocals of Marlene Johnson (from Frankfurts deep house imprint Stir 15) with some true 21st century dancefloor business.
Moonstarr
Thanks to Rainer Trüby travelling all over the world, he picked up a copy of Kevin Moon´s Moonstarr EP "Dupont" on Public Transit Recordings in Toronto, Canada.
Soon after making the rounds in the European DJ circles everybody was seeking to get a copy of this very limited piece from the 23-year-old producer, DJ and Co- Label owner of Public Transit Records.
Fitting right into the broken techno section nowadays represented by the usual suspects from West London, Moonstarr is not trying to copy this specific sound but pushing the boundaries of electronic music defying any categories or genres. A real jazz swinger.
Shawn Lee
In the past, Shawn Lee´s "Happiness" already caused a lot of punters to run up to the DJ booth asking about the track playing that we decided it would be a raw mistake not to put it on this longplayer. One of our all time summer classics which also works fine as a reminder of better days in the winter time comes from UK based American singer and songwriter Shawn Lee.
He released his latest album on Wall of sound´s sublabel "We Love You Records" entitled "Monkey Boy".
Ashley Beedle did his Bossa Remix treatment on a limited 7" which adds an extra portion of that
summer feeling already included on the original version.
Get out your shades and flip-flops no matter what the weather is like.
Slow Supreme
Considering the versatility of his work, it´s difficult if not impossible to pigeonhole the artist Slow Supreme. His productions draw inspirations from 70´s and 80´s soul and funk, and combine samples with live Rhodes, bass, guitar and vocals.
28-year-old Hans Peter Lindstrom, now settled in Norway´s capitol Oslo, was already known as a recording artist and DJ for the local Jazid Collective before he started to make his own productions.
Winning the Bedroom Grooves contest in 1999 he soon released his first music on Jazid Collective. Shortly after the limited "Fresh" 10" including the highly acclaimed Track "Granada" ( also featured on the Trüby Trio DJ Kicks) hit the streets.
As a true exclusive to this compilation the song ´Full Kennedy Breakdown´ represents once again that Slow Supreme is definitely an act to keep an eye on in the future.
Dan Curtin
Electro-, Techno-, and House don Dan needs no introduction. He is one of the true producers and DJs who has been there since the beginning. The Recloose (Detroits new star) remix is showing us a perfect combination of two innovative and inspiring guys. A very sublime, warm and moody piece of jazzy techno. Welcome to a new warmth.
Atjazz
Martin Iveson (aka Atjazz) runs the label Mantis Recordings along with his mate Andy McCandless. Martin works as a musician for computer games company Core Design and has produced music and designed sound effects for some of the world's best selling titles including 'Tomb Raider'.
Iveson released his first EP "Story" on Mantis in 1996 before he began to record for Nottingham based label DiY Discs. Since then he produced and remixed for a multitude of labels around the globe gaining huge respect along the way.
Most recently he dropped his album "Labfunk" choosing this term to describe music that isn´t quite "pure this" or "pure that" but is instead quite simply something else.
After his contribution to FSOJ 7 in the Remix disguise for Kimbu Kimra`s "Raise The Dead" we are happy Martin "Atjazz" Iveson donated "Wrong Type Of Day" as an exclusive track to this volume.
Jon Kennedy
Delivering one of the highlights of his latest 12" on Tru Thoughts, Jon Kennedy produced in "Smith vs. Smith" a twisted downbeat excursion with an "Old School" attitude and a "Nu School" approach, which is not featured on his album. On his recent debut longplayer "We´re Just Waiting For You Now" Jon hybridizes jazzy hiphop with abstract electronica and delicate melodies.
Asking Jon how he came up with his pseudonym he replies that his original name was Phil Collins, but apparently it was already some bloke from the 80´s which made him change it to Jon Kennedy!
That has never been used before...........has it ?
Kaos
Dennis Kaun aka Kaos is a hyperactive multitalent and longtime Compost mate.
He is also one of the most pupular european graffiti artists and a former member of the now split up Terranova collective. In 1984 he started spraying (signed under his name Kaos) and has also been a semi-proffessional-skateboarder. Since he is now working on a solo-project under the name "Ghost Cauldron" and a project in collaboration with Patrick Pulsinger we are glad to present one of his recent outputs.
Being very much HipHop-influenced, the track "Around In Circles" shows with its more than 130bpm that Kaos is also open minded to alternative elements.
Attica Blues:
Attica Blues has become already a Hiphop institution. They have been producing in various genres and under different disguises but have never lost their original hiphop approach. After their more or less upsetting marriage with Sony´s daughter Higher Ground, Charlie Dark (DJ) and Nwachukwu (Programmer & Midi Assassin) just built up their own imprint Surplus with their first release "The Way" being one of the most inspirational tunes of recent times.
´The Quest´ which was already included on their last LP ´Test, don´t test´, comes in this case in a Remix by Compost´s own Beanfield. Now being a 7/8 twisted broken beater , Beanfield take you on a journey using the original vocals of Roger Robinson and add their personal note without changing the genuine spirit.
Soul FC
Soul FC stands for various collaborations between Frank Wiedemann (Keys, Production) and numerous Djs and musicians from the german city Karlsruhe.
The man who started it all was Stefan Lechner today living in Barcelona.
As experienced Djs with many influential Soul, Jazz and Latin records in their collection , they decided to start producing. Since they had access to the equipment and already played in various bands and projects from Jazz-Rock to Easy Listening it was more than a logical conclusion to do so.
After Frank & Stefan finished the tune "Tranespotting" featured on this FSOJ and sent it to Londons westend IG Culture immediately picked up on it and proposed to release it through his MainSqueeze imprint.
This collaboration hasn´t happened so far that we decided to accelerate the publication of this phusion track in the truest sense.
The Underwolves (CD only)
The Underwolves have been attracting attention since their early singles like 1996s "Nine Lives on Filter and remixes, such as their elegant approach to Bim Shermans "Can I Be Free From Crying. Both tracks showed that the Underwolves are one of few artists to truly grasp the potential of drum and bass to do more than just fill a dance floor or disintegrate into over blown concept albums. In part, this comes from their eccentric approach to making music. Professor Stretch, classically trained and a self taught engineer, handles all the technical details, while Ned, former DJ and jazz obsessive, cajoles, listens and generally points developments in the correct directions. It´s not how most people do it but it works for them.
Its Ned and Stretchs varied, wandering backgrounds that make their album Under Your Sky (JCR) a work of great emotional depth as well as eccentric beats. Its an album that doesnt fit any obvious pigeon hole other than that marked great record. And thats all that matters.
Earthbound are the Zurich based Producer- und DJ-Team Alex Gustafson and Alex Dallas, both former members of Natural High Productions (Compost Records). With their very selective and highly acclaimed label Straight Ahead they are one of the best addresses when it comes to Nu-Jazz or any innovative form of the broken beat.
Already being one of the standout cuts from the recent Underwolves album ´Bird Song´ is a track that is claimed by many to be unremixable due to the high level the original version is operating on. Earthbound however added their specific character without disturbing the original´s soul.
Butti 49
The Jazzbeat duo Butti 49 consists of Norwegian DJ, clubpromoter & record-shop owner Snorre Seim and active musician Oyvind Jakobsen.
Both met at Snorre´s clubnight in a little town called Stavenger and decided to cooperate in order to combine Oyvind´s technical skills and Snorre´s musical knowledge. First outing was the limited edition bossa beat "Brasilikum" 7" on their own Tokijo imprint. After mighty props by the likes of Rainer Trüby and Gilles Peterson they soon found themselves releasing their first EP on Chicago´s Guidance Recordings.
The track "Spiritual Rotations" featured on this FSOJ has been causing quite a stir and can be found in playlists by every main player.
But why all that namedropping it´s just an excellent tune afterall that made it hard to decide whether it gets the deserved attention as the last track- but we figured it makes you want to start listening all over again.
Slope (vinyl only)
Detroit breakbeat made in Germany- probably that´s what describes this tune the best! Daniel Paul being one of the key player´s in the Berlin based Sonar Kollektiv around Jazzanova. In this team up with DJ Honesty they released another dancefloor filler that works both as a tool in a coherent DJ-set as well as a head nodder on the way.
Once again showing their versatility in production Slope are a duo that creates a broken beat monster with a techno feeling without loosing the organic touch.
They sure have come a long way and we are very curious to know which direction they will be going next.
