Linernotes by Gilles Peterson:

With great pleasure I pronounce Compost the most consistent and forward thinking record label of continental Europe. Quietly releasing the right and proper pieces from a slowly building alternative club culture that has now not only made worldwide news but is also changing the rules Stateside!
Compost is the honest and independent vision of Michael Reinboth who I first met when he invited me to play at his tiny residency in Munich 13 years ago! I was at that "lets see what's up in Deutschland phase" and Michael was the first to show me there was a future in playing cool records for a living!
In the years that have passed his label has somehow not only represented the correct edge but most importantly has given this scene a true base enabling DJs and artists a feeling of being part of something truly meaningful! It hasn't been easy as there's always someone ready to put you down but after enough time you achieve collective strength to knock the cynics off! Today all of clublife is looking at Germany a little like the French touch a few years back and where Daft Punk led the disco revival I feel truly excited at the impact Truby, Jazzanova, Kruder , the Fauna Flash crew and the whole Compost family will have on world clubbing related music ! These guys are bringing the Soul back! Ask Oakenfold, Carl Cox or Tenaglia and you'll see that even the biggest djs in the world are tuned and inspired by those Bavarian beats.
Your friend
Gilles xx

Welcome to Compost's 100th release – a truly special anniversary.

Time to celebrate Germany's "best independent record-label of the moment" (Groove Feb / March 2001) with an album that brings you (almost) all Compost artists and also represents the variety of Compost Records - exclusively produced tracks especially for this anniversary compilation and no retrospective. That's the way Compost always kept it: prospective, up to date, versatile and keeping it exclusive.

The music:
In the past couple of years the diversity and distinction of Compost's Label philosophy was receiving growing popularity. Especially internationally, Compost and several of its acts and DJs succeeded in climbing up to the premier league and to be amongst one of the "big names". Younger labels partially emulated the philosophy and a growing number of club nights started promoting this sort of sound (e.g. the DJ Rainer Trüby, one of the biggest supporters of this sound, is one of the most frequent booked DJs from Germany playing at many different clubs worldwide). Due to the increase in high quality releases of talented musicians & producers in this field and DJs supporting their music, they all, as well as Compost Records and assorted labels (Talkin' Loud, Laws Of Motion, People) helped developing and grew themselves into an own sub-cultural scene. One symptom of this scene since the very beginning was that the sound is hard to define and describe, as there are no strict boundaries: The main trademark which describes the sound and scene best, is the fact that the supporters and producers all praise the true eclecticism, which means: Diverse musical influences and mixing all sorts of musical styles together, preferably Jazz, Brazil, Hip Hop, House, Soul.
The scene ranges from Detroit Techno (Carl Craig, Recloose, Stacey Pullen), Hip Hop &
R'n B (Mos Def, Jill Scott, Q-Tip), 2-Step (MJ Cole, Wookie), Drum & Bass (Roni Size, Peshay), House (Phil Asher, Blaze, MAW, King Britt) ... to those artists who probably can more easily be described inside this genre such as Jazzanova, Modaji, I.G. Culture, Peter Kruder, Alex Attias.
The German music magazine Groove simply puts all this together under the name of "Phusion". Ok we agree and are proud to be part of this movement and we will do our best to supply the scene with new innovative flavours in the future.

The label:
Compost Records evolved in its 8 years of existence from a small one-man bedroom label to a very productive and creative business located in a Loft-style office in East-Munich. Today Compost Records has about 20 artists under contract covering a wide variety of different musical styles: House, Electro, Brazil, Drum & Bass, Downbeat, Nu Jazz, (2-Step Remixes).
Due to its renown and quality Compost managed to get remixes from great well-known underground producers as Kruder & Dorfmeister, Peshay, DJ Krust, Recloose, Ian Pooley, Patrick Pulsinger, Pole, Cinematic Orchestra, SWAG, Attica Blues for Compost tracks since the very beginning. Michael Reinboth always keeps an eye on upcoming underground stars, as this time Zero db and their killer-remix of Trüby Trio's "Galicia" on this compilation.
Besides Compost's artist releases, the label is also very well-know for its high-quality and forward-thinking compilation series "Future Sounds Of Jazz" and "Glücklich". They are always state-of-the-art musical extracts.
Basically Compost stands for quality leftfield underground club music - so if you are into that sort of vibe, you'd better stay with us, we will not disappoint you.

The label design and corporate identity:
Andrew Arnold is the Head Of Design at JCR, Compost Records since the first release. While his education for architecture he began designing the first record covers for Compost and Compose. Until now he is responsible for the major part of the label's visual appearance, having designed most of the record covers, advertising, flyers, merchandising and this website.
He also directed, filmed & edited a promo video for "Beanfield - The Season" which came out in early 2000 and can be downloaded as a QuickTime movie from this website (see start page). more info: www.aagd.de

Introducing the artists...

Trüby Trio
Trüby Trio is a project by Rainer Trüby and the Fauna Flash duo Christian Prommer and Roland Appel. So far they released two 12" on Compost Records and produced tracks exclusively for the Glücklich 3 and 4 compilations. A remix 12" including mixes by Jazzanova, DJ Muro and Boozoo Bajou came out in winter 2000.
Remix projects include Nitin Sawhney, Turntable Rockers, Kim Sanders, Peace Orchestra, Mr. Gone. On this compilation is a remix of "Galicia" by one of London's underground artists of the moment Zero db. Twirling up the original with Jazz-Tek, this track is a bomb !! This is the style of the future !!

SNC on the Trio:
"Embracing elements of music past and present seems to come as second nature to the three Germans who once again provide fluid and funky jazz for boppers. "A Go Go" is a classic, uptempo sample-led fusion of Latin percussion and '60's R'n'B grooves; this track will never fail to rock the dance." (About "Carajillo" / "A Go Go", Straight No Chaser, 12/99)

Fauna Flash
Christian Prommer and Roland Appel just released their second album "Fusion", Drum & Bass, yes of course... and a lot more. Variety is the best word to describe the music, which makes this album perfectly listenable; not like many other Drum & Bass artist albums who lack in monotony.

Jockey Slut on the new album:
"Ultimately, they've succeeded where many others have failed, resulting in a varied album that in places stops you in your tracks."
(Jockey Slut 02/01)

Fauna Flash's recently did remixes for Dzihan & Kamien and Experimental Pop Band. On this compilation is a remix of the album track "Ten" by Pole (only on CD). Pole is a highly respected international well-known "Electronica" producer from Berlin – his remix ...a stunning tune.
FF's second track is a collaboration with Wei Chi, Fauna's long time bass player and a great producer as well.
Expect mixes of Fauna Flash tracks by Tom Middleton, Stephane Attias, Peter Kruder, Salvador Group, Dixon, Stereoptyp etc. on forthcoming 12inches later this year.

Wei Chi
Wei Chi is Raoul Walton. Raoul was born in New York, Manhattan, and played with everybody in the Jazz and Fusion scene over there in the mid-Eighties. Just to mention a few: Michael Urbaniak, Sam Rivers, Dom Um Romao and Kenny Kirkland. During the last two years he spent some time in Munich, doing Jazz and Freejazz sessions, recording and playing both studio and live-gigs with Fauna Flash.
Wei Chi so far released two tracks on Compost, one on the FSOJ 6 and one on Glücklich 4. On this compilation Wei Chi comes up with a new wonderful vocal track featuring vocals by Merid Osterman and the sharp club-oriented collaboration with Fauna Flash, good stuff !

Kyoto Jazz Massive
Japan's greatest when it comes to future jazz dance music - Shuya Okino and Yoshihiro Okino once again produced a pure quality track. So far the KJM released one 12" and one exclusive track for the Glücklich 4 compilation on Compost Records.

Mixmag on KJM:
"...this neo-samba rinky-dink dance symphony, all scattered snares and twinkling keys, is for you: a vision of some cosmo-futuro nirvana where everyone has beards, raps in Esperanto and is named Gilberto. Jazz: massive !" (Mixmag 04/00)

Les Gammas
Marc A. Frank and C. Jochen Helfert from Augsburg produced two new tracks for Compost 100. "Outra Vida" is a superb song featuring vocals by Nina Miranda from Smoke City (remember the Levi's spots including Smoke City's track "Underwater Love").
For "Discipline '100" Les Gammas once again teamed up with Karl Berger, for an excursion into the fields of Drum & Bass, and this one is rocking !!
So far LG released the highly acclaimed debut album "Exercises De Styles" and two remix 12inches (including mixes by The Cinematic Orchestra, Recloose, Next Evidence, Capries and Beanfield) on Compost Records.
In the recent past LG did remixes for Minus 8, Bugge Wesseltoft, EMO, Bill Evans, Sheila Landis.

Muzik on LG's debut album:
"Exercises De Styles is a thoroughly modern trawl through the last thirty years of jazz-dance history. Live instrumentation dominates as the duo seek to swing the fuck out of the new millennium. Doubtless Peterson, Forge et al are on it already so do yourself a favour and join them – these styles are ultra-sharp and built to last." (Muzik 08/00)

Salvador Group
After their first release "Crosswinds" on the FSOJ 7, the two members Florian Hartl and Julian Fischer, both natives of Bavaria, come up with their second track. "Moksa" is fantastic, make sure you won't miss upcoming releases of this talented group.

Ben Mono
Ben Mono of former Force & Paul joins Compost 100 with his first solo release, which is great ! He also is one half of Space Clique together with Jan Weissenfeldt of Syrup. They already had several 12" releases on Spinning Wheel Records and one exclusive track on Hospital Records' "Outpatients" compilation.

Syrup
Syrup is the latest side-project of Munich-based musician and producer collective consisting of members from The Poets Of Rhythm and Beanfield. "D/A/D" is their first new track after the release of their debut album "Different Flavours" in 2000. Their music is a fine blend of discofied old-school Funk, 100% live played with four-to-the-floor beats, Lo-Fi funk, horn-sections and nice guitar licks. Tasty !!

Beanfield
Jan Krause and Michael Mettke (new Beanfield member who already worked with the Trüby Trio, replacing old keyboarder Tobias Meggle) give you an imprint of the new Beanfield flavour. "Re-ac-tion" is nothing but tasty leftfield music. And the electro influenced "Close The Gap", so far only available on 12", now gets its release on CD. Beanfield's latest album "Human Patterns" and their 'consensus-hymn' "The Season" (Groove 02/01) marked a major step in the evolution of Compost Records. Remixes for album tracks were done by Dixon, Earthbound, SWAG, Attica Blues, Ian Simmonds.

Comments on Beanfield's last album:
"This album is excellent!" (Mixmaster Morris)
"...you'll soon understand why Gilles Peterson's such a fan as the beats roll mellifluously..." (Muzik, 11/99)

Beanfield just finished a remix of Attica Blue's track "The Quest", watch out for it !

Worldless People
Worldless People is the new Compost signing, consisting of the Worldless Producer Wolfgang Rüter from Hamburg and DJ Daniel Magg from Constance, Germany.
After their debut 12" including the great "Positivity" and the uplifting club-hit "Minority In Terms Of Thought", here a new track called "Won't Let You Down"; a perfect track - deepness and quality.

Germany's Groove magazine on WP:
"...perfect connection of downtempo & off-beats with a housey feeling... excellent debut..." (Groove 02/01)

Minus 8
Robert Jan Meyer comes up with a new fantastic track called "Come Along" for Compost 100. This is a tune !! 100% top-class production from Switzerland proving once again that Minus 8 is one of the up-coming artists at the moment, definitely moving up to the first-class producers of the genre.
His last album "Elysian Fields" was his first release for Compost after two albums on Higher Ground Records.
Three remix 12inches were released including mixes by The Amalgamation of Soundz, Big Bang, Les Gammas, Dr. Rockit, Tiny Trendies, Zimpala and 2-Step mixes by Gabor Deutsch and Intega.

7 Magazine on M8:
"Swiss DJ Robert Jan Meyer emerges from the hills with a charming, beautiful album...in fact, every track is a winner...needless to say, it's gonna be at the front of my collection for a long while" ("Elysian Fields" was essential album in 7 Magazine, 9/8/00)

Just a few weeks ago Steve Jobs himself decided on the music for the commercial of the new Apple powerbook and he chose "Snowblind" by Minus 8 out of about 200 proposed tracks. The videoclip can be viewed as Quicktime file on the Apple website. The CD single featuring "Snowblind" is out now !

Minus 8 finished the work on the music score for the film "Viktor Vogel - Commercial Man" directed by Lars Kraume and starring Götz George, Alexander Scheer and Chulpan Khamatova. The film will be in the cinemas on the 12th of April 2001. A soundtrack featuring the original score by Minus 8 will be in the shops soon.

Twice
Twice are Berlin's Daniel Paul and Alexander Barck de Jazzanova – Great twisted Electro Jazz atmosphere – Nuff said !!

Supersempft
Supersempft is a band playing all tracks live. Composer and arranger are the two musicians and producers Till Maragnoli and Thomas Braun from Freiburg, Germany. In 1994 they met each other in an reggae-afro band and since 1997 they have worked together as Supersempft. On Glücklich 4 they had their first release and for Compost 100 they provide us with more delicious black forest beats & vibes.

Procreation
The man behind Procreation is Samuel Geiser, born and still living in the capital of Switzerland, Bern.
After his first 12" "Us Vs. Them" on Compost in 1999 and "Citizen" on the recent Community sampler, "It's All Related To Life" is the new track for Compost 100 and finest electro-jazz fusion.

DJ Mag on Procreation:
"...complex beats, gliding chords and smokey atmospherics. The four tracks offered here melt slowed drum & bass rhythms into soothing melodies, creating loverly laidback vibes of jazz." (DJ Mag 10/99

The Amalgamation Of Soundz
Jean-Claude and Mark, who met each other in 1990, are long-time members of the London underground music scene. Under the name of The Amalgamation Of Soundz they had plenty of releases on divers labels such as Filter, Chocolate Boy, Ubiquity. For Compost they produced their first exclusive track for the FSOJ 7 compilation.
On Compost 100 now you can find their second instalment, a big, big peace of music. Weird Shit !! The Amalgamation Of Soundz will release a 12" on Compost in summer 2001.

DJ Force
Dj Force is the other half of former Force & Paul. Living in London now, the 22 year-old DJ Force introduces himself with a monster tune . "Shadow In The City" impressively showcases his die-hard Hip Hop roots and reflects on time spent hanging out with De La Soul's Maseo and other NY b-boys: rumbling beats, a warped jazz riff and a pitbull of a bassline combine to a truly fearful entity that makes the wait for his forthcoming album even harder, which will be out sometime in 2001 / 2002.

A Forest Mighty Black
After "Sunday City Sequence" which was on the Compost Community sampler, Compost 100 features another new A Forest Mighty Black track. Bernd Kunz's debut longplayer "Mellowdramatic" on Compost remains as a classic in Downbeat music and can still be heard in many bars, clubs and on plenty compilations. "Mellowdramatic" tracks were remixed by Peshay & Flytronix, Karma, Rollercone, Hacienda etc. Bern Kunz is in the studio, so expect his new album in winter 2001 / spring 2002.
